Jimmy Mears, captain of the fishing boat Mandy Ness died Tuesday night when his boat capsized a few miles off Barnegat Light, N.J.
The Coast Guard confirms the 44-foot fishing boat, the “Mandy Ness,” capsized 10 miles east of Barnegat Light late Tuesday night.
Captain Jimmy Mears was caught under his capsized vessel and died, according to the Coast Guard.
"It's a tough thing to have to go through here," said Mears brother Rick Mears.
The Coast Guard says a rescue swimmer went underneath the hull and recovered Mears. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
A second person, later identified as Trevor Horan, was rescued by Rick Mears who rushed to the scene after the distress call went out.
Horan is doing well, according to officials.
The Coast Guard is investigating what caused the boat to capsize. Mears' family believes another boat possibly hit the "Mandy Ness."
